Pasqual(e) Sartorelli was born in Italy about 1792 to Domenico and Teresa and married Orsola Rebech. She was born about 1797 the daughter of Pietro and Liberna. The children of this Pasqual and Orsola that we know of were all born in Verona, Italy and are Luigi born about 1818, Teresa Domenica born 7th February 1819, Rosa Girolama born 20th November 1820, and Anna born 6th February 1825.

On 1st February 1822, Giovanni Giacomo Sartorelli was born in Verona, a son of Pasqual Sartorelli and Orsola Rebech. Nothing is known about the early life of Giovanni, but on 16th April 1857 he married Jane Terry, the daughter of James and Mary Terry in Holborn, London. On the marriage certificate, Pasquale’s occupation was given as Shoe Maker, the same occupation that Giovanni was practicing.

Pasqual Sartorelli died in Verona on 9th November 1858 and Orsola died on 1st April 1853.

Jane Terry was the eleventh child in a family of twelve, all of the children being born in Rowling, which is near Goodnestone by Sandwich in Kent. Two of Janes’ sisters, Mary and Charlotte, must have kept in touch as they feature later in the story. Mary Terry married Thomas Kibble on 23rd July 1854 in London and Charlotte married James Goldfinch.

On 5th December 1857, James Giovanni Sartorelli was born to Giovanni and Jane, at 28 Leather Lane, Holborn, London. Three years later, on 11th April 1860, Giuseppe Michele Sartorelli was born, this time at 98 Leather Lane.

Leather Lane was full of tradesmen such as grocers, tinsmiths, cobblers, and milliners. There were also a lot of Italians in the area, and in 1861 the Sartorellis’ had Italian families on both sides of them. On one side were a boot maker and a figure maker, and on the other was a flower maker.

At the time of the 1861 census, James Giovanni Sartorelli was living with his uncle and aunt, Thomas and Mary Kibble, in Westminster. He was also with them in the 1871 and 1881 census where he was down as James K Sartorelli. Later documents have him as James Kibble Sartorelli.

In 1871 Giuseppe Michele Sartorelli was also living with an uncle and aunt, this time Charlotte and James Goldfinch in Chillenden, Kent. He was down as Josef. He was still with them in the 1881 census where he was down as Joseph M Sartorelli. Joseph is the anglicized version of Giuseppe.

In 1881, Giovanni and Jane had moved to Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. Giovanni was still a boot and shoemaker, and Jane was listed as a confectioner.

Jane died 18th January 1888 in Ramsgate, Thanet, with Giuseppe dying on 27th May 1896, in the Union Workhouse, Minster, Thanet, and Giovanni on 6th May 1900 also in the Union Workhouse, Minster.

There is a family story that Giovanni Sartorelli came to England with his brother and they settled in Tring, Hertsfordshire. I have currently come across nothing to support this, but it may well be correct. It appears that Giovanni Sartorelli was illiterate as he ‘made his mark’ on the few documents I have managed to obtain. There is also a great range of spelling of names, such as Jevanie (for Giovanni) in the 1881 census and Giosepe (for Giuseppe) in the 1861 census. The birth certificate for Giuseppe Sartorelli has his name spelt Guiseppe, which is a common misspelling if the name is taken phonetically.

James Kibble Sartorelli was a house decorator and architect. On 16th April 1893 he married Edith Eliza Woods, the daughter of Charles and Charlotte Woods. The Woods family had been fisher folk in Gorleston, Suffolk for many generations.

James and Edith Sartorelli had nine children, and seem to have moved around a lot. In 1891 Edith May Sartorelli was born in Pancras, London, and on 8th February 1893 Thomas Edmund Sartorelli was born in Willesden. By 1895, the family had moved to Norwich where Henry James Kibble Sartorelli was born on 14th July 1895. Sadly, Edith May Sartorelli died in 1896 in Norwich aged 5.

On 22nd December 1896, William John Kibble Sartorelli was born in Gorleston. Henry James Kibble Sartorelli died in 1897 in Gorleston aged only 2. On 7th July 1900, Gladys Edith Sartorelli was born in Gorleston.

By 1903 the family had moved to Hendon in London, and Violet May Sartorelli was born. Unfortunately, she died the same year. Sidney Charles Sartorelli was born in 1904 in Hendon, and Doris May Sartorelli was born in 1906.

James Kibble Sartorelli died on 3rd October 1918 in Willesden, and Edith May Sartorelli died on 6th December 1955 in Willesden.

Thomas Edmund Sartorelli married Edith Emily Warner, the daughter of Charles and Ellen Warner, on 25th December 1916. Edith was born on 17th November 1895. Thomas and Edith had five children. Thomas Sartorelli died on 15th January 1975 in Greenford and Edith died on 26th October 1975.

William John Kibble Sartorelli married Bessie May Watling, daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann, on 25th December 1922 in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. William and Bessie had one son, Peter Malcolm Kibble Sartorelli. William Sartorelli died on 16th June 1950 in Beira, Mozambique while on holiday from South Africa where the family was living. Bessie died on 30th 1993 in Ontario, Canada, where her son was living.

Gladys Edith Sartorelli married Alfred Claridge, son of George and Emily, on 9th June 1924 in Willesden. They had one daughter, Doreen Edith Claridge. Alfred died in 1958 and Gladys died on 14th April 1978.

Sidney Charles Sartorelli married Nellie Beatrice Jeeves in 1931 in Paddington, London. Sidney changed his name to Sidney Taylor during the War due to the anti-Italian feeling at the time. Sidney and Nellie didn’t have any children, and Sidney died in 1985.

Doris May Sartorelli married Frederick Hobbs and they had one daughter, Joyce Hobbs.
